Day Trip Glebe & Newtown

Glebe & Newtown

Catch a bus from Central Station (431, 432, 433, 434) to Glebe Point Rd

-Glebe is Sydney’s bohemian centre and one of its oldest suburbs. Originally it was a land grant of 400 acres given by Governor Arthur Philip to the Anglican Church. As you can already guess, the name Glebe derives from the land it was developed on, a glebe. Today it’s known for its variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs & bars, little antique bookshops and its heritage listed buildings. There is a bustling market on every Saturday from 10am – 4pm on the grounds of the local public school on Glebe Point Rd which is worth visiting.

-Broadway Shopping Centre can be accessed from Glebe Point Rd. Here you can find clothes stores, a food court and supermarkets. After exploring the shopping centre, find the exit onto Parramatta Rd (main road) and start walking a short distance back towards Central Station. Take a right turn at the Lansdowne Hotel onto City Rd. Continue along City Rd passing the Seymour Centre on your left and Sydney’s oldest university, Sydney University on your right. The road will become King St, Newtown.

-Newtown was thought to be a residential and farming area and took its name from the first grocery store “New Town Store”. King Street is the main street of Newtown and is also referred to as “Eat Street” due to all the cafes, restaurants and bars. Newtown has a vibrant atmosphere during both the day and night due to the eclectic mix of people and large number of university students living in the area.

Take your time to walk along King St past the book stores, clothes shops and enormous number of Thai restaurants.

-Catch a train from Newtown Station (on King St) or bus (422, 426) back to Central Station.
