Maarten; Tourism Internship in Melbourne

Maarten is from The Hague and completing an internship in the International Travel & Tourism industry in Melbourne. He wants to dive in the Great Barrier Reef before he leaves Australia and has some good advice for future interns.

My home city: The Hague is famous for: Its policy of The Netherlands and for the internal court of justice
When I was young I wanted to: Be a LEGO designer
If I could live anywhere in the world, I’d live in: Brazil or in Indonesia. Both countries have a very friendly culture, and are full of chances due to their growing economies.
I chose Australia because: I have dreamed for a long time about coming to Australia. Once I got to hear that I needed to do an internship I took the chance.
My impression of Australia before I arrived: That there is a laid back lifestyle
One thing I have learnt about Australia that I didn’t know before: Aussies like to make fun of themselves.
One thing I want to do before I leave Australia:  I really want to discover the outback while sleeping under the stars. Have a drink while looking at the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And to top it all off I’d like to swim with the fish in the Great Barrier Reef
Worst job I have ever held: It was a farm job which I had. The supervisor was a great entrepreneur but had no people skills. Therefore the induction was terrible. His expectations were unrealistic. But it did teach me how I should handle new employees in the future. With patience and with social skills.
Best advice given to me: The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is what you do after falling. It has nothing to do with heritage or money. It is all about getting up or not.
Destination of your next trip: Anywhere in Australia. I will also visit Indonesia for a little round trip.
Australia described in one word: VB
